A nice opener for the album, movie and Aloha Special. It captures a feel of Hawaii, which it intends to do.
I think I will just give every song, every word Elvis ever uttered a zillion stars. No need for intelligence here or even rendering an opinion..
I give both the song and the movie 1 zillion stars each!
Good song that is worth the 3.5 stars it has as I´m writing this. This is one of the not so good soundtrack, allthough it actually has two 4,5 star songs IMO ; Sand Castles and This is My Heaven. I will always take Elvis´ best movie songs over any of the Beatles´ songs though !! They should make a 5 cd set with the best movie songs from the 60´ (and yes there are enough songs for that IMO), so non elvis fans could hear the best of his movie songs without having to hear the lesser songs.
Don't care for the song. I like Stop Where You Are, This Is My Heaven, Sand Castles, and Scratch My Back just fine.
Awful movie with a bunch of poorly recorded awful songs including this title tune. Elvis is good although he sounds uninterested and the operatic bursts dont work for 1965 on a bad song like this. The Beatles visited Elvis when he was making this film. I'm sure he didn't talk about the songs he recorded for this film.
I will review the song and ignore the movie and find that as a title song it was distinctly passable. Fitted perfectly into the Aloha concert and like songs of old released in modern movies, takes on a new life. - 3 1/2 stars.
This is such a terrific, fun, catchy and exotic song and it's always such a joy to listen to. I rate this song and Elvis' rendition of it 5 stars.
The title song from Elvis' 21st movie is a passable tune at best that Elvis doesn't sound overly interested in singing. I go back and forth as to which is worst, the "Harum Scarum soundtrack or the "PHS" soundtrack. Both movies rank in the bottom three of his movies (I feel "Harum Scarum" is the worst) and when it comes to albums I think this PHS is slightly more palatable than HS, but that opinion might change tomorrow. The "Kissin' Cousins" LP is almost as bad, but it at least as two high caliber bonus tunes, a top 20 hit from the movie and a few decent tracks from the film.
pretty catchy tune in my oppinion. fits really good with aloha concert.
PHS was the first, brand new LP album I ever owned. I had got hold of some old and worn out copies of Golden Records and Elvis Is Back. But, this new shining baby sure held something new and I was really excited when I put it on. It was nothing near what I thought Elvis was all about. But, while waiting for some uptempo numbers and rockers, I was let down. Even though I played it over and over, my only comfort was that my mother liked it. Somehow it became special.
Over the years there are only three songs that I find suitable for inclusion on my CDR compilations and those are Drums Of The Island, This Is My Heaven and Sand Castles. Especially the two last mentioned are actually songs I really like. Good voice and performances from Elvis. The title track is one of the poorest! Still, I must admit I was suprised to hear it on the Aloha show. And I thought it suited that opening scene. That's all. Regarding the movie I was shocked to see Elvis in those opening scenes in the airplane. It didn't become better during the movie. For the first time i though of Elvis as overweight! Luckily he pulled himself together for later movies. But, PHS became the biggest letdown of all Elvis' movies imo!
Possibly Elvis' worst film. It's a shame there are a lot of contenders for that title. The song, however, isn't really too bad. I mean, it sounds like an advertising jingle for the board of tourism in Hawaii, but it isn't all bad. And I do love the operettic outtake on the FTD release. Elvis' voice was so good and strong and powerful, it is a shame it was wasted on this. He truly could have done anything.
A bad song from an equally poor film, and there were many more songs like this to come.
I have nothing against the song. It fits well the first segment of the Aloha show. But the sad attempt to recapture the magic of the Blue Hawaii film with the new picture failed, definitely.
i happen to love the movie and this song!-especially the outtake version on the expanded RCA/FTD albu:..where you hear Elvis laughing and having fun with the song!-'yes' he probally hated having to sing the song, but the professional artist that he was,he gave it his very best he could.(how many artist today could have managed to make awful songs sound good as Elvis did with all the movie songs he was forced to sing??)How Elvis managed to to such a good job on what many consider 'mediocre' movie songs i do not know-but he did...thats what elvis was,a unique artist who tackle any song and sing any style!!-i agree that this song sounded better suited in the Aloha from Hawaii concert when he's arriving(that was a very good gimic they did),but i still play the song and still enjoy it.
Bad song, terrible movie. But I must admit, Elvis sings it well, he probably did the best he could do with it
this worked better for the Aloha special than it did for the awful movie from which it came. so-so song.
