Words & Music: Edwin Hawkins

Oh happy day, oh happy day
When Jesus washes, oh, when he washes
He washes my sins away, oh happy day

He taught me how to watch,
Watch and pray, watch and pray
And he rejoy every day, every day

Oh happy day, oh happy day
When my Jesus washes, oh when he washes
He washes my sins away, oh happy day

Yeah, happy day

The TTWII version is stunning, too bad it isn't really complete. Way too short!

I Love this performance. It shows us how great Elvis was as a singer, in a field that only few can enter. This rendition is so powerful that someone comment in Youtube about this song/video:"Plug this guy into the national grid and our energy problems are over!" Amen

He should have recorded this instead of Put Your Hand In The Hand , He Is My Everything, and some of the others. Much more powerful gospel song.

Oh to have a proper live version of this in professional sound quality. Elvis puts so much power, feeling and soul into the brief snippet he does in the rehearsals it's astonishing. Absolutely love it.

Could have easily become a single with some real studio time. So I'll just have to stick with what there is on Youtube.

A number one for The Edwin Hawkins Singers and could have been a similar success for Elvis. Would have fitted in nicely on the He Touched Me, album had it the song gone to the studio.

How come Elvis himself didn't make a point of recording a studio version of this one ?...His rendition from TTWII is indeed a masterpiece, too bad the sound ain't clear enough...

Sorry, but this doesn't do anything for me. Perhaps if Elvis had gone into the studios and gave it his special treatment. To me the 'His hand in Mine' Lp is hard to beat, and when released 'Crying in the Chapel' showed us that special Elvis stamp of recording.

The version on Command Performance import back in the 80's just inspired me to make the song a regular for me...Too bad this official release never made it farther than a stage rehearsal...And it is a big miss for RCA not to have recorded at least on soundboard the Command performance version...well...they should have recorded every show to be ready for any impromptu version of a non repertoire song by Elvis Presley...makes my day

oh yeah... he should have recorded this. This song was made for him.

The version from TTWII evidenced what was yet another missed opportunity of what could have been achieved in a studio. Rough and unpolished it may be, but it is still a joy to hear.

Elvis sings along a record, but blows that record apart. What a voice! Amen.

This is such a beautiful song and Elvis sang it with so much passion, intensity, power, feeling and soul. But, Elvis should have recorded a proper and full version of this gem in the studio.
