Make Me Know It

Rating:
4.5 / 5

Words & Music: Otis Blackwell

You say that you love me
And swear it to be true
But if you care to come over here
And make me know it do
Come on now, make me know it
Then go ahead and show it
But if you care to come over here
And make me know it do

You say you've got kisses
And swear that they're brand new
I think that's fine if you ain't lyin'
But make me know it do
Come on now, make me know it
Then go ahead and show it
I think that's fine if you ain't lyin'
But make me know it do

You won't have no trouble proving it to me
Come right along you'll find me
Helpful as can be

You say you wanna hold me
And stick to me like glue
Well hearing's deceiving
And seeing's believing
Make me know it do
Come on now, make me know it
Well go ahead and show it
I say hearing's deceiving
Seeing's believing
Make me know it do

You won't have no trouble proving it to me
Come right along you'll find me
Helpful as can be

You say you wanna hold me
And stick to me like glue
Well hearing's deceiving
And seeing's believing
Make me know it do
Come on now, make me know it
Well go ahead and show it
I say hearing's deceiving
Seeing's believing
Make me know it do

Oh make me know it
Then go ahead and show it
Make me know it
Then go ahead and show it

Like many performances on the "Elvis Is Back" album this is a fine recording too. It makes "love" sound so innocent.

Really nice song. I enjoy it mostly because it got so much energy and I think you can hear how much Elvis loved to be back in business.

This song was coupled with It's Now Or Never for it's UK release in 1960. Elvis' competitors always had something on their plates to deal with when a Presley single was released in those days, as many of the B sides could well have made their way to the charts on their own merit.

Elvis IS Back was the LP and he surely was with this great song that kicked it off. Fine song & performance. Would have been a great A side single.

One of my favourite songs from one of my favourite albums, belongs up there with the best of the 50's rock performances. Superb.

I love this song, it holds many memories of hearing "Elvis Is Back" for the first time. I was bought it as a child while on a shopping trip and I had to wander around while longing to get home to play it. I spent a couple of hours sliding the LP out of the carrier back to examine the many photo's on the sleeve. When I did finally get to play it, this song hit me like a ton of bricks! It is also significant for being the first song Elvis recorded when he returned from military service, so he must have had a lot of nervous energy in him while recording it. Elvis truly was back.

In those days Elvis was 'just' out for the service, but in those days the music changed by the day! With his outstanding LP Elvis is back he did prove that he was still The King. This was the initial song of the album and some kind of opening! Great song full of power. The sixties had a wonderful start!

It took me decades to warm up to the EIB album. I didn't dislike it, but I didn't love it either. It wasn't until FTD released their 'classic' version that the album came into focus for me. Now I love it! "Make Me Know It" is a great song that kicks off a great album.

Very symbolic to start his first album after military service with Make Me Know It: Am I still your King..... Yes, I think so :-)

A great recording from a great album at a great time for Elvis. He was letting his fans and everyone else know he was back and making us know it. I never get tired of this song, the LP or other recordings from the early 60's.

Love it ! This is so great. It pre-dates Spector's wall of sound in it's own way. It's fascinating what a great sound Elvis and his musicians got at those sessions

EIB was the first LP I ever owned in 1960. It took me ONE spin to warm up to this great LP. Make Know It felt like a rebirth, a new dawn, and I was so happy Elvis was really back. Too bad the other studio LPs that followed didnt have the same impact and no comment on the soundtracks. But this is a great song & LP.

My earliest memory of Elvis is listening to the It's Now Or Never single in the mid seventies (still my favourite E song!) and then flipping it over to find Make Me Know It on the other side and like JerryNodak says it hit me like a ton of bricks. I was only five years old but I was hooked. Then I saw GI Blues and Blue Hawaii which when you're five are fantastic and Elvis is amazing. They just compounded the effect the music had on me and I would stand on the dining table singing Make Me Know It and All Shook Up with using the lead of the kettle as a microphone. Blush. I know I was only young but it's 32 years later and I'm on an Elvis forum for pete's sake! Anyway, about a year after first hearing this song I came downstairs on August 17th to be told that Elvis had died and my first thought was "not MY Elvis! It must be another Elvis cos MY Elvis is only 25 and not 42 like the news man said" I couldn't understand how someone who sounded so full of alive singing MMKI could die in their bathroom all of a sudden. Ah innocence...

Love this track, with its Pop sound. From Elvis Is back, Elvis Best album ever, and one of best Albums in music history.

It is hard to comment on this song without also commenting on the fantastic album it came from. Whenever Elvis had something to prove, man he did it in spades! The Elvis Is Back album is, in its own way, every bit as phenomenal as Elvis' other comeback in 1968. And just as that comeback started with "Trouble"--which set the tone and announced that Elvis may have been doing dumb movies for almost a decade, he was still relevant and as amazing as anyone had ever been, this album kicks off with "Make Me Know It" where he seems to be challenging his fans to prove their devotion. Sort of a statement of "yeah, I have been in the army and I have gotten the fan mail, but baby, I am back! If you still care about me--make me know it." It is a brilliant start to a brilliant album that showcases what a virtuoso Elvis was a all styles of music--pop, rock, ballads and especially blues.

A wonderful song sung by the pre-eminent singer of all time. It doesn't get much better than this! Definitely one of my favourites!

Good R&R record from the 60s from a fantastic LP. Otis Blackwell was as good as Leiber & Stoller.

Awesome R&R tune that I never tire listening to. And Monster: what a great story. I really enjoyed it.

great great song that along with many others should have been better known to non elvis fans.Trouble being when all the greatest hits are regurgitated over and over, then that's all the non elvis fans are going to see.when you think of the number of albums that you could create with good material like this and never having to repeat the same track twice. there's a wealth of good material that the non fan has probably never heard and may make them think you know what i never knew elvis recorded this?but like anything it may already be to late and should have happened more than thirty years ago.five stars for this classic.

Did Elvis ever sound any better than on this album? One of the definitive recordings of the King's career.
GEORGE (GK) wrote on December 21, 2011
With this album "Elvis was back" for sure ! This song rocks, and It was a great way to start off, his first album after leaving the army. "Elvis is back" & "From Elvis in Memphis" & "Elvis-Back in Memphis" (9 years later) are three of the best Elvis Albums, after 1960.

This song has never done anything for me - is average, lacking it's own identity in sounding like so many other Blackwell compositions. One of the weaker tracks - along with the likes of Thrill Of Your Love, Girl Next Door and Dirty Dirty Feeling from a couple of weeks in March/Arpil 1960 which producded some of the greatest recordings in rock and pop history.

This initially suffered as far as I was concerned in the UK as it was on the flip side of the legendary It's Now or Never. Through the years I have come to fully appreciate that it was a brilliant pop rocker in its own right, and now I class it in the top tier of his releases.

This was the very last session where Scotty Moore played lead guitar. Hank Garland was present, but played electric bass. A wonderful rock 'n' roll song. A great way to say goodbye to the fifties with a song that clearly still breathes that decade.

A great rollicking rocker, tons of energy and tons of fun, from maybe the best album ever made, "Elvis Is Back".

This song should have been his first released 45RPM single once he was out of the Army. Better than "Stuck On You"; just my opinion.

Fun pop rock song thats the perfect beginning to the great Elvis Is Back album. Could have been a top 10 hit.
