Love Coming Down

Rating:
4.1 / 5

Words & Music: Jerry Chesnut

I remember how your eyes used to light up
Over promises that I made
But for the first time in my life
I know now how it feels to be afraid
I don't know what I’d do if you go away
This would sure be one lonely old town
For a man's so busy going up in the world
That he couldn't see love coming down
Love coming down

I remember all the times you told me
Love's all that matters to you
And looking back now, wondering how I believed
I had things more important to do
I can see how I must have looked to you
Like some fool on a merry-go-round
And that a man's so busy going up in the world
That he couldn't see love going down
Love going down

Can't you see how everything I’ve learned
Would just be wasted if you leave me
If you just give one more try
I swear I’ll always be here when you need me
If you can find it in your heart to forgive me
I'll try to keep both my feet on the ground
But if a man's so busy going up in the world
That he couldn't see love coming down
Love coming down

Perhaps the most over-looked, under appreciated song of his career. Beautifully written by the same man who wrote another gem "It's Midnight". Elvis' vocals are absolutely perfect and he packs every bit of emotion he can out of the song. This song is so auto-biographical, I use to wonder (when I was young, before I realized Mr Chesnut had written songs for many people) if Elvis wrote this under an assumed name (Jerry Chesnut). Five letter first name, odd seven letter last name and writing song like this and "It's Midnight"??? (I know better now!). A great song writer meets a superb vocalist.

such a touching beautiful song. Elvis is really into it. I love it.

Even though Elvis sings this song superbly and clearly gives it his heart this song doesn't really do much for me.... i prefer the up-tempo numbers any day...sorry

Truly a great song from a great session. I really like these late 70's recordings. Elvis is really emotional and puts his heart into it. I listen to this a lot.

I think only true die hard Elvis fans can love these sesssions. Cant ever see Joe Public saying the jungle room sessions are songs they want to listen to. Sorry. Elvis misfires.

Beautiful song. Beautifully performed. From the heart. I deeply enjoy listening.

I can hear Elvis" feelings while singing this song...and it almost makes me cry...

A song packed with feeling and emotion. I love this song and the Jungle Room Sessions. 5 stars from me *****

I don't understand why this song would be considered a lesser ballad by some, or even maligned as not being written well. As a professional writer (granted--not a songwriter), I think this is one of Elvis' best written ballads. Lines like, "I remember all the times you told me... love's all that matters to you," and "If you can find it in your heart to forgive me I'll try to keep both my feet on the ground," are concise and heartfelt. It's helped by a superb vocal from Elvis, who wrings every drop of emotion and meaning from the song. The production isn't overblown, either; the instruments really compliment the song. Us men can get so caught up in our dreams that we fail to see the most important things right in front of us. This song could also be interpreted practically as a message to his fans.

5 star song ( yes I am a die hard fan) but that doesn´t mean that I love everything Elvis sang. I have never let it detract anything from a song that it is depressing ( in fact this song you can learn from ). What makes Elvis singing so great is his voice and the amount of feeling he put in a song, no matter if that song was optimistic, angry or depressing. some times I feel like hearing Wonderfull World, other times Love comming down. There is an Elvis for every taste and an Elvis song for every mood.

This song may come from a deeply reflective part of his career, but it is heartfelt, stirring and extremely well sung. A cry for help or whatever we deem it to be, it is taken on its own merits a top notch performance.- 4 stars

When Elvis went to Germany (or Texas), someone gave him a book called Poems that touch the heart. These lyrics could be in there. And Elvis sings it with so much emotion, I can hardly keep it dry.

This is such a brilliant, overlooked and underrated song and Elvis sang it with so much feeling, emotion, intensity and passion. I've never skipped it. This song should definitely be far better known than it actually is. I love every song from the spectacular "From Elvis Presley Boulevard" album.

Love Coming Down. Been there, done that. I understand where Elvis is coming from. As for what Joe Public might enjoy I don't give a rip!

My favourite song from the album!

For me it doesn't get much better than this. I don't care about none-fans, there is much other stuff to start with, but this is my Elvis. 5 stars period.

Elvis far from misfires. This is a 5 star performance. The "Elvis Presley Boulevard album" is a real good album, full of strong material. However, I would have added a few "rockers" to the album. "For the Heart" is the only "upbeat" song on the "Boulevard album".

A patchy album the song is almost a dirge but I play it sometimes but obviously not to cheer me up.

1-star. Terrible song. Collects dust in my CD files.

I just couldn't recall this song at all, so I had to hunt it out and listened to the mater and take 3... and all i can say is ..bland, so bland. And this represents all I dislike about Elvis' song selection during the latter 70's. I couldn't even give it one star. I'm so sorry Elvis, you were so much better than this

I thought that I would revisit this song looking at the latest reviews and see where I went wrong.. I feel no different from my previous comment in that this a well sung song very deep and soulful, but obviously not one to get a party swinging. To classify it star wise the equivalent of the poorest film songs is beyond belief.

Muffled sound, a elvis that wasn't in his greatest voice (to say the least) and a generic composition. No great melody to remember, just another bland, forgettable mid 70's ballad that sounds painfully uninspired. Elvis, what happened? 2 stars.

By then everything was coming down… this is not my Elvis...
Steve V wrote on December 06, 2019
The new material coming in was not up to snuff anymore. The voice was getting worse by the year, and Elvis had not been into making records for a while now. This was the result, and you can hear it all coming down.

~ One of the better tracks on the "From Elvis Presley Boulevard" album. I like the overdubbed spiraling-downward sound effect during the song. The song was (and still is) good... good enough for Elvis Presley, Conway Twitty, and George Jones to record.

When I first purchased the Boulevard album on its release I was disappointed. It was mostly slow depressing ballads! I was young but now this album has matured like a fine whiskey. I love this album because i have experienced life and all it’s hardship. This is a beautifully written song, sung by the best singer the word has ever seen. I don’t hear a bad voice as some have reviewed, I hear a tired and lonely man poring his heart out through his God given gift. 4 stars

I don't mind if he did better recordings before, if his voice wasn't as good as it once was, all I know is that he sang this from his heart and it gets to mine each time I listen to it. For me the best track of the album, along with Hurt and Bitter They Are.
