Long Legged Girl (With a Short Dress On)

Rating:
3.7 / 5

Words & Music: Winfield Scott John Leslie McFarland

All right
I've been thumbin' rides travellin' light
Walked the streets till past midnight
Trampin' roads, trails and lanes
Scaling cliffs fields and plains
Searchin' till the early dawn
For that long legged girl with the short dress on

Riding trucks, bikes and skis
Sailing lakes and brooks and seas
Driving wagons, cars and jeeps
Walking stilts in ten foot leaps
Searchin' till the early dawn
For that long legged girl with the short dress on

And everywhere I go she's been and gone

She's fine, it's just too bad she's the travellin' kind
So fine, I just can't rest till I make her mine
I've been from Maine to Tennessee, Mexico from Wahkiki
Rain or shine, sleet or snow
Searchin' high, searchin' low
Everything depends upon
That long legged girl with the short dress on

She's fine, it's just too bad she's the travellin' kind
So fine, I just can't rest till I make her mine
I've been from Maine to Tennessee, Mexico from Wahkiki
Rain or shine, sleet or snow
Searchin' high, searchin' low
Everything depends upon
That long legged girl with the short dress on
The long legged girl with the short dress on

Way to short for a single.

A throwback to the old days and discs of the 50's. Not quite at that standard, but a very energetic performance and a good track. Elvis doesn't sound refstrained and you could tell with his request to sing more rock songs in "Spinout" and the way he peformed "You Gotta Stop" and "She's A Machine" for "Easy Come, Easy Go" that Elvis was starting to get restless. Upon it's release as a single, Billboard magazine called it another winner for Elvis. Unfortunately it peaked at #63 and spent only five weeks in the Hot 100. This ended Elvis' consecutive top 40 hit streak that dated all the way back to "Love Me Tender" or "Heartbreak Hotel" if you don't count the "Shake, Rattle And Roll" / "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" single that was released with the six singles from his first LP in Sept 1956.

Elvis really elevates this one! This is a surprisingly good rocker, and whenever they start talking about what would make a good remix, this one and Let Yourself Go are always my picks. This one rocks! (Terrible movie though....and the soundtrack has some real low points, but it also has a few real gems!)

This could probably be a bigger hit today than it was in the 60's with a proper remix and extended running time. Much like ALLC. Lyrics are still relevant. Beat is great. Elvis sounding a bit like the 50's again. Why not go for it. Let Yourself Go also.

Quite efficient !...the atomic power act is back !

The song would have fitted comfortably on a soundtrack album of the time of release, but a single? Never! A complete cockup by RCA as the chart positions showed.

Short and to the point. Fits the movie scene well. I've always liked it.

An embarrassing time for Elvis fans when this was released as a chart contender, what were RCA thinking of? Perhaps a remix might be the answer, in which case we can expect more than a minute and a half of music. The song isn't that bad to be honest, what there is of it.

Yes it was way too short for a single release in 1967 at a time when singles were starting to average around 3 minutes, like Good Vibrations. Elvis records really seemed to be behind the times then. But it isnt a bad song. I liked it back then (what there was of it). I agree, a remix and extended running time could bring this song to a whole new audience. Forget the movie though. Another dreadful one.

The title is longer than the song! I like it, but I the sound isn't good enough and a remix should be done.

The "outakes" of this song, were better than the released finished product. Listen to the "Double Trouble FTD" and see how the song "Rocked" more in the earlier takes of the song.

This is such a splendid and fun song and it's one of nine songs that Elvis recorded that was written by Winfield Scott. The song would probably become a major hit for Elvis if a re-mixed version gets done.

Never liked it, totally mundane, uninteresting, and predictable, even Elvis could not rescue this turkey.

I like to hear Motörhead record this one. Always loved it, but there are more rocking outtakes out there. I miss a guitar solo.

Bad bad choice for a single then.It hardly received any airplay I remember.A remix would work well on this though. It's about time we had something charting, it's been a long time since the last one.

His heart & soul wasn't in it. Problem was worst was to come. 1968 couldn't come soon enough.

I recall I thought this song had some "edge", but it was way too short. No guitar solo brake or anything, just a straight forward rush from beginning to end. And ending before you knew it... I've looped this song to run a little over 2:00 minutes for my own listening pleasure. No wonder this one didn't get much airplay. The splendid B side to this single didn't manage to save it either. A remix, yes maybe!

I love this song and gave it 5 *. Yes it's too short. This song always reminds me of "Little Less Conversation".

Can't stand this song. Completely forced and non-essential. Guess RCA needed to release something. Bad record.
