Kiss Me Quick

Rating:
4.5 / 5

Words & Music: Doc Pomus Mort Shuman

Kiss me quick, while we still have this feeling
Hold me close and never let me go
'Cause tomorrows can be so uncertain
Love can fly and leave just hurting
Kiss me quick because I love you so

Kiss me quick and make my heart go crazy
Sigh that sigh and whisper oh so low
Tell me that tonight will last forever
Say that you will leave me never
Kiss me quick because I love you so

Let the band keep playing while we are swaying
Let's keep on praying that we'll never stop

Kiss me quick just can't stand this waiting
'Cause your lips are lips I long to know
Oh that kiss will open heaven's door
And we'll stay there forevermore
Kiss me quick because I love you so

Pure pop, nothing great but that was 1962 for you. Elvis was no longer blazing the trail with new sounds.

If released in 1961 or 62 it would have been a big #1 in both the US & UK, but there were so many other great recordings at this time there just wasn't time or space for this fab recording. By the time 2 years later when it was released as a single Elvis was in decline chartwise and needed something fresh. Apart from 'Chapel' we had to wait until '68 to get that fresh new sound.

I was shocked to see this song have over four stars. This song is okay, but it is very schmaltzy and a bit of a ripe-off of "It's Now Or Never". Elvis sings it well, but I wouldn't put it anywhere near the top of his recordings. Originally the lead off song on "Pot Luck" in 1962 (an album that doesn't get going until track four), I don't think it would have been a big hit in 61 or 62 and it surprised me it hit #34 in 1964 (It was released as the flip side of "Suspicion" as RCA tried to cash in on Terry Stafford's successful version of "Suspicion"). It wasn't even meant to chart as RCA released it on it's gold standard series. It unfortunately did and took away from the single "Viva Las Vegas" which had to share time with it's flipside (What I'd Say) and this song. Without this single, VLV hits the top 15 easily, perhaps the top 10. When the Beatles reviewed this song on the British TV show "Juke Box Jury" the comment were "I didn't like it all, no" (Ringo), "..the songs a lot of rubbish" (George) and "...Kiss Me Quick , it sounds like Blackpool on a sunny day" (Paul).

I think this is a very good song, and had it been released in 61 it would have done much better on the charts. A song don't chart for no reason people. It's a catchy tune, and compared to othe material from 61 I think it stands out.

A good song, that charted in the UK. Couldn't give a dam what the Beatles thought about it. And with some of the crap that they released I care even less!

I like this and always wondered why it was poorly viewed back when it came out but I do have a theory. This was recorded in June 1961 and released as a single two years later. It might not sound like much but music changed so fast back then. I think it fitted in with the style of music that made the airwaves in 1961 but by 1963 beat music was well into its heyday and tracks like KMQ and the kind of ballads and doo wop material that did well from 1960-1962 sounded incredibly dated overnight. It was a mistake to release it when they did I think. RCA had missed the boat and should have rushed Memphis Tennessee out instead. Just to remind people that Liverpool wasn't the only good source of quality contemporary music at that time.

Here in Scandinavia it was a big hit actually. Went to no 3 in both Norway and Sweden. I like the song very much and it was a suprise to see it didn't do better in the US. I would have thought that the pairing of Kiss Me Quick/Suspicion would have been a smash. It is with me though!

Not a great song by any means, Ok for 1962 I guess. By 1964 terribly outdated and a poor choice for a single even if it was a B side. Music had moved on in leaps & bounds. I do believe this killed some sales on Viva Las Vegas, a much superior song. RCA strategy strikes again!

Kiss me quick/Night rider was released in parts of Western Europe in the beginning of 1963 only a few weeks after One Broken Heart For Sale. It reached number 2 in Belgium and stayed more than 5 months in the top twenty, in Germany it went to number 3. In Ireland a cover version even made it to number one. It's typical early sixties Elvis, a little bit schmaltzy but powerful and oh so well sung. Nothing wrong with it.

"Kiss Me Quick" would have charted higher in 1960 and 1961, (when songs like "Now or Never" and "Surrender" were topping the charts) However this is a real good song, with a nice arrangement, and great vocals by Elvis. This song was "remixed" by A DJ in Hong Kong, and he did a real nice job with it ! It wasn't commerically released, but from time to time the song appears on various websites.

It should have been released as a single with Suspicion at the time. But movies were in the way. Those two would have made a double hit, maybe Suspicion as A side. Funny when I listen to Kiss Me Quick I always think of it as the same type of happy song like "It's Not Unusual" by Tom Jones.

always liked it, and still do. Don't give a damn for trends or so called dated or outdated music. To me a song touches my heart or not, be it from 1920 or 2011! Even if it would have been released la Always El.

I love the song ! And it should have been a double "A" smash hit single !!

still asking why it was released as a single. The song is timeleess. And listen to his voice. What a voice. That's why he was the best singer. Quality on high level.

Kiss Me Quick, all by itself, is such a wonderful track! It's fluff, pure pop and almost as much fun as Follow That Dream. Elvis voice is so perfect and smooth, it just strikes me as impossible not to enjoy today. If we do insist on putting it within the context of the 60s, it's more along the lines of something Dean Martin may have sung in one of his films or 60s albums ("Sway" in particular is similar.). That isn't meant as an insult, but until 1968 proved otherwise, yes, Elvis was more or less establishment compared to the British invasion. But 40+ years later, now that the dust has settled, Elvis' place is more than secure and we can forget about chart positions and competition and just enjoy what a great piece of perfect pop fluff this is!

Great delivery by Elvis, the song flows very well indeed. Whils not a groundbreaking song, it is verty easy to listen to and very catchy

First heard this on Radio Luxembourg and loved it immediately. The latin type songs suited his voice to perfection and it was obvious he enjoyed singing them. Big hit in Europe when released but the UK and USA waited too long for it to be a big smash.

Not great; just okay I should say. The ugly brother of It's Now Or Never.

Good song from one of my favourite albums.I can see the commercial sense of releasing this as a single but I think RCA missed their chances not putting out Suspicion too.

This is such a beautiful song and Elvis' rendition of it was fabulous. I've never skipped it. It was such a tremendous addition to the marvelous "Pot Luck" album.

I loved this song back in the '60's and I still love it today. I disliked the Beatles in the '60's and I still dislike them today. Elvis song, 4 stars. The Beatles, 1 star.

It's a nice flowing song, and pot luck is a decent lp as well. But you can definitely hear why acts like the Beatles, the Stones and Dylan would made elvis for years artistically obsolet very soon. There is no hunger, no sex, no real emotion in this music. It's decent, it's listenable, but it means nothing and it stands for nothing. There's an alarming absence of artistic personality here. That doesn't mean that im unable to enjoy this from time time to time, but it doesn't have the quality of the music that made elvis so great. 3 stars.

Even without groundbreaking achievements in literature and lyrics it's a very fun, feel-good song with that smooth & effective voice from the early 60's. For that reason 5 stars. I suppose some ppl will criticize the happy vibe as being superficial in a way. Are these the same ppl who criticize the heartbroken ballads of the 70's? To me it's proof Elvis could convincingly convey any type of human emotion, perhaps more restricted by autobiographical developments rather than by artistic skills.
