Maybe it's too late. Sometimes I even hate myself for loving you
Trying to be strong then nighttime comes along and I start loving you
Wanting you. Where is all my selfcontrol I'm burning way down in my soul
And needing you, and wishing I could be the man, I try to
Hating me for wanting you to be with you knowing you don't love me like you used to
But it's midnight, Ohh and I miss you

It's getting late and I know that's when I am weak
Funny how things have a way of looking so much brighter in the day light
I ought to go to bed to try and straighten out my head and just forget you
Oh but it's midnight yes and I miss you

It's getting late and I know that's when I am weak
Funny how things have a way of looking so much brighter in the day light
I ought to go to bed to try and straighten out my head and just forget you
Oh but it's midnight yes and I miss you

It's midnight and I miss you

An autobiographical song performed with deep feeling and every ounce of emotion he can muster. I am not one of those fans who puts every sad song in the days following his divorce down to Priscilla, but I make an exception with this one. - a 5 star track yes.

He just had his divorce, but obviously was still hurt. A very powerful track.

This is such a splendid song and it's always been my favorite track from the "Promised Land" album.

One of the real gems from the Stax sessions in December of '73. Elvis makes you feel the lonely lyrics like only he could and is total control from beginning to end. Coupled with it's A-side "Promised Land", this single was one of highest quality singles of his entire career. Chart-wise it was a success too. With "Promised Land" peaking at #14 on the pop chart and "It's Midnight" hitting the top ten on both the country and easy listening charts. 5 stars all the way.
