A very old friend came by today
'Cause he was telling everyone in town
About the love that he just found
And Marie's the name of his latest flame

Though I smiled the tears inside were a-burning
I wished him luck and then he said goodbye
He was gone but still his words kept returning
What else was there for me to do but cry

He talked and talked and I heard him say
That she had the longest blackest hair
The prettiest green eyes anywhere
And Marie's the name of his latest flame

Would you believe that yesterday
This girl was in my arms and swore to me
She'd be mine eternally
And Marie's the name of his latest flame

Based on a Bo Diddley rhythmn. A magazine voted this once as the best rock 'n' roll single ever. I can understand why.

This is easily one of Elvis' very best songs and it rightfully was a big hit for Elvis here in the United States and in other countries too.

One of the best songs of any style from his career and that says it all.

A very good, catch pop song from 1961, but not worthy of the superlatives being handed out by the reviewers on this website. I never thought about this song being part of Elvis' live shows and it doesn't seem like an obvious choice either to have been one. It wasn't one of his biggest hits from 56-63 and perhaps it is one that Elvis didn't care for as much as some others. It did reach #4 on the U.S. chart in 1961, but like his preceeding single "I Feel So Bad", it didn't have any legs only spending 7 weeks in the top 40. It is very well delivered in Elvis' uniquely impeccable style and I give it 4 1/2 stars, but rate it behind "Return To Sender" and "Little Sister" and equal to "She's Not You" and "Devil In Disguise".

My favourite Elvis song as a kid, pure perfection.

Pop prefection. One of the best. I like both sides of this single, but I've always preferred this side.

What a great great song! If only all of Elvis' output in the 1960s could have been at this level. It is pretty much perfection as far as pure pop music goes, just as Jailhouse Rock or Hound Dog were perfection as pure Rock and Roll music goes.

This song is the perfect example as to why Elvis's voice made him King !

Great song, Great recording, Great single, Great chart topper, Elvis at his early 60's peak. Everything as it should be. Great times for Elvis.

One of those classics that are part of my ' daily shot'. Though many know the flip side better, this has that spunk Elvis is so famous of. Yes, and live it would have been fun: Elvis and drummer Tutt doing their powerful interaction. That would have given some nice flavor to the shows. Unfortunately we have to live without the would-haves. Well ... there is so much to enjoy, what the heck let's keep this one original.

Great song, one of his best all time. Yes it should have been an A side as it was perfect for the early 60's. Also should have been done live in the 70's. Why not? Elvis had one of the best rythym sections in the business, so I dont buy that it would have been hard to do live. You can do any song live on stage as long as it isn't an overblown studio production number.

When I hear this song I think of a cowboy riding in to town for some reason ? Yes a good song for all that. Nice piano, probably Floyd Cramer.

the perfect pop song....period

A double sided classic! It's beyond me how this could miss the top spot on the Billboard charts.
It's in a class of those double sided classics like Hound Dog/Don't Be Cruel, Jailhouse Rock/Treat Me Nice, One Night/I Got Stung. I never tire of His Latest Flame. If separated, these two should have been individual no1's! Hard one to do live in the 70's I suppose?

A perfect popsong! One of the first songs i ever heard, when i got a christmas present as a six year old. It was the cassette of the Camden album ´Heartbreak Hotel´ . Ever since, this song is one, if not THE, absolute number 1 on my Elvis list. A MASTERPIECE!!

It's because of songs like this one that I just can't live without Elvis music! The double A side single Little Sister/His Latest Flame is another milestone in music industry. Thank you my King!

Pop perfection. One of the best. Should have been separated from Little Sister as its own A-side. Another seriously ignored song when Elvis returned to live concerts.

RCA went for this track in preference of Little Sister as the singles A side, when the record was distributed over here in 1960 by Decca. The record reached the top of the charts so they got it right. I like listening to how the different arrangements developed in the studio when Elvis recorded the song. One of my top 100 Elvis favourites.

It is a very nice song and I think it´s one of his best songs, for sure. It´s kind of underrated, perhaps because it was released at the same time as the fabolous "Little sister". I would have loved to hear Elvis perform this live during the seventies.

This has and always will be one of my all time favourite Elvis songs. I remember being amazed at how the song was put together in the studio - an all time classic. Absolutely wonderful.

Tatadatada, Tatadatada... oh boy, only by reading the title I can't get it out of my head. That says it all. One of Elvis best' songs ever!
