Words & Music: Sid Wayne Sherman Edwards

Beware of a gal in britches
Yo-di-o-di-o
Never trust no gal in britches
No-di-o-di-o
If you had a sense of this here horse
You would have known it by now of course
Who wears the britches is the boss
That's a gal, that's a gal in britches

Don't mess with a gal in britches
Yo-di-o-di-o
No feminine gal wears britches
No-di-o-di-o
She'll beg you to come to the country dance
You ride twenty miles for the big romance
She shows up in her brother's pants
What'd you expect from a girl in britches

Yo-di-o-di-o-i-ay, It's none of my misfortune
Yo-di-o-di-o-di-ay, Just thought you'd like to know
Don't marry no gal in britches
Yo-di-o-di-o
You'll never know which is which's
No-di-o-di-o
She'll put a halter through your nose
Have you cooking and washing clothes
While she goes chasing them buffaloes
Bet your boots, that's a gal in britches.

when my English wasn't that good yet, still isn't, I always thought he sang: "don't mess with a gal in the ditches"..

A song recorded for, but thankfully not in the movie "Flaming Star" (1960). You can see where this one was cut from the movie as the original print contained the song (Elvis and Steve Forrest are riding on their horses talking about girls who wear britches). Not awful, not good either and it would have been awkard in the movie. Elvis tries to find the humor in this one and sings it an odd "hick" voice, but it is only worth a listen every now and then. This one stayed unreleased until after his death. 2 stars and that might be kind.

Beware of a song called britches Yo-di-o-di-o. You want to know why The Beatles poll higher than Elvis? Here is a good example. There were too many of these 'film' songs in his career.

Only one thing could be worse than this and that would be take 1.

A surprise song when I first heard it on Volume 3, all those years ago. Too short to bother me.

I like his voice and hillybilly delivery on this one which has traces in it of 'Let Me' from Love Me Tender. No way as good as Let Me but I can sit through it, although admittedly I am only playing it on this rare occasion to give this review.-2 1/2 stars

It is a fun song in a hillbilly style. Elvis' legacy is consisting of 1. fabulous and outstanding recordings belonging to the top of modern music be it RnR, pop or country; 2. songs that belong to the general stream of which (imo) Elvis ranks also to the top and 3. fun songs. This song belongs to the last category. In life there are many moments that are easy going, relaxing or funny moments. This song sort of represents those moments. I for one am happy there are there songs. Why not. Not everything has to be top. So who cares about comparing this song to other artists oevre (containing even more fluffy stuff than Elvis' recordings). They cannot stand in the shadow of Elvis.

A template for the movie songs to follow.Elvis really needed to put his foot down earlier and we could have been spared stuff like this

Like "I Got Woman", it has a very dated view of women's place in society. From a tempo perspective, it is a nice little ditty. I'm glad that they cut song from the movie. Pacer was torn about his dual ethnicity. Elvis singing a series of upbeat song would not have fit the story-line. Cane & a High Starched Collar foreshadows "Elvis on Tour" footage when Elvis wore a high collar and carried a walking stick.

Pedestrian movie fodder; absolute crap. Bad, very bad, but ok if used (and it wasn't) for typical Elvis flick.

1-star, period. Total garbage and very similiar to "Let Me" from the film Love Me Tender, which was barely tolerable.

From time to time, I don't mind listening to this song myself, but an awkward tune for sure. Good decision for deleting it from the movie Flaming Star. Three stars.
