Blueberry Hill

Rating:
3.9 / 5

Words & Music: Al Lewis Vincent Rose Larry Stock

I found my thrill on blueberry hill
On blueberry hill when I found you
The moon stood still on blueberry hill
And lingered until my dreams came true

The wind in the willow played
Love's sweet melody
But all of those vows we made
Were never to be

Tho' we're apart, you're part of me still
For you were my thrill on blueberry hill

Nice but I'll stick with The Fat Man who owns this song.

Fats Domino has the better version.

Possibly Bing Crosby did the original version? Fats the definitive. Although I like Elvis' version too A great year for Elvis and many memories for me too

One of those few songs when he did not surpass the original, though pretty close! It is hard to improve on some other great artist's visiting card. Guess it was just to fill up the LP at the time.

The 4 songs added on to the Loving You Album were not as a group the best efforts from Elvis in the 1950's. The exception IMO is I Need You So which is top notch while the other 3 including Blueberry Hill here, lacked that certain magic. I will give this 4 stars as the second best effort of the group.

Acceptable but not one of his better efforts. I disagree with the opinion expressed by "Gorse" as I believe the 5-songs included on side 2 of the "Loving You" soundtrack are, with the exception of "Blueberry Hill" pretty decent; especially "I Need You So" by Ivory Joe Hunter. I could never understand why "Is It So Strange" was never included on side 2 to round out the total of 6 selections instead of 5. Guess The Colonel figured he had 7 on side 1 so only give 'em 5 on side 2 for a total of 12 songs per album, which seemed to be the norm back in the mid 1950's for RCA.

This is such a magnificent and fun song and Elvis' rendition of it was fantastic. But, Fats Domino definitely has the best version of this iconic and classic song.

I'm a New Orleans guy, so I obviously have to go with the definitive Fats Domino version as the best. Still, I am glad Elvis covered it; it is a classic 50s song, and Elvis does a perfectly acceptable version, but does nothing to make it his own. Compare it to what he did with "Your Cheatin' Heart" or even "Tutti Frutti"---he really owns them. Even though I have heard lots of outtakes of Elvis' version of "Blueberry Hill", it still seems like he didn't take enough time to turn it into a real "Elvis song". Or he really had so much respect or reverence for the original, that he just saw no way to improve upon it. I quite like that he brought it out at a few 70s concerts too.

Elvis almost imitates Fats on this one instead of putting his personal stamp on it. A lesser effort and not one I listen to often. The bonus songs on the "Loving You" LP were hit and miss. I love "Have I Told You Lately" (so much better than Ricky Nelson's version) and "I Love You So". "Don't Leave Me Now" is good, but this one and "True Love" are among the bottom 20 songs of Elvis' 1950's output. "Is It So Strange" is excellent and would have been a highlight on this side if RCA had included it.

A true classic! I give it the same amount of stars that are in the heavens.

A uninspired version of a classic song. The drums are unprecise as hell, elvis vocals doesn't add sh×t to the song. Elvis version is only a forgettable LP-Filler, mediocre at best.

Never cared for Elvis' version. Wasn't a big fan of Fats's version either. Elvis 2 stars. Fats 3 stars. Hardly ever listen to the Loving You LP. 3 stars.

I like Elvis' rendition of Blueberry Hill. Why should everything he recorded better the originals? It's nice and I have no trouble listening to Elvis singing it. I agree with those that one of the best left-overs: Is It So Strange, could easily have rounded off side 2 of the LP back then. Party and Hot Dog were so short, they could easily have added Is It So Strange as a 13th track. A fine ballad imo!

Of course, it can't top Fats Domino, but I've always liked it, and the rest of Loving You sans "Hot Dog." Four and a half out of five stars at best.
