All Shook Up

Words & Music: Elvis Presley Otis Blackwell

A well I bless my soul
What's wrong with me?
I'm itching like a man on a fuzzy tree
My friends say I'm actin' wild as a bug
I'm in love
I'm all shook up
Mm mm oh, oh, yeah, yeah!

My hands are shaky and my knees are weak
I can't seem to stand on my own two feet
Who do you thank when you have such luck?
I'm in love
I'm all shook up
Mm mm oh, oh, yeah, yeah!

Please don't ask me what's on my mind
I'm a little mixed up, but I'm feelin' fine
When I'm near that girl that I love best
My heart beats so it scares me to death!
She touched my hand what a chill I got
Her lips are like a vulcano that's hot
I'm proud to say she's my buttercup
I'm in love
I'm all shook up
Mm mm oh, oh, yeah, yeah!

My tongue get tied when I try to speak
My insides shake like a leaf on a tree
There's only one cure for this body of mine
That's to have the girl that I love so fine!

The superlatives to describe this song have yet to be found out. A superb performance that belongs in my Top 10 any time.

My favorite version is the one on the 68 special...Billy Joel's version is not bad either !

A classic. I think it´s his best fifties song. There have been many great versions through the years, but my favorite version is from Elvis In Person, where Jerry Scheff did a strong contribution with a lovely effort on the bass

68 is a awesome version but i never understood why they put his 3 biggest songs from the 50's and put them in a 3 min medley. they deserved a batter treatment, more respect.

I liked especially the swinging version of Hawaii '61. Fav.
Steve Morse wrote on August 14, 2008
With the possible exception of Hawaii '61 (I would have to re-listen), the later versions might just as well be of a different song. The 1957 original is unbeatable . . .'Pop Perfection'.
JerryNodak wrote on August 14, 2008
Why also in a medley? Because they only had about 53 minutes of actual air time. As for the song itself, I've never cared for it. If I must listen I prefer this version.

I have heard most of Elvis' versions of this great rock n roll classic but his original 1957 recording wins by a mile

Always a pleasure listening to Otis Blackwell songs performed by Presley! Amazing that this song became, deservedly, became rock history, when you know that Blackwell wrote the song inspired by a Pepsi Cola, when Al Stanton (a music publisher) shook his coke and told/provoked Blackwell to write a song about the coke. Talk about deep lyrics (lol). Big hit though for Presley, and luckily he favorised Pepsi Coke all his life. Hawaii 61 version is interesting, Vegas 69 version is very raw, rocking and strong. I also like the Spankox version released this year!!!

One of the 5 greatest rock and roll songs of all time. No contest, the 50's version wins by a mile. Why? Is the perfect record. Live versions are nice but cant stand up the the 1957 studio version. Did I say perfection?

This was on the very first album I ever heard in my life and I was stunned by it all. Well, in the case of this song I was all shook up. There is hardly a day this song doesn't pass by! Brilliant song and definitely belonging to the very top of my list!

This song is one of several definitions of Rock'n'Roll Music Elvis made in the 50's. It's a Master Piece and one of the most influential music’s ever ("She loves you… yeah” from The Beatles was inspired in this one). From 1960 to 1962 only a handful of songs can be compared with this one, and after it only Suspicious Minds is an equal moment of inspiration. In the 70's Presley never, ever did nothing that can be compared with this music.

Again - one the gems in the legacy. The brilliant 1957 studio version was never equaled by anyone including Elvis when he revived it in his live shows. He rushed it.

My absolute favourite version is the 61 Hawaii Performance...It has such a tremendous swing it never had further down the road, I jut can't stand none of these rushed Vegas to Nothingville versions.
theoldscudder wrote on March 05, 2009
Love the 50's studio version. The live versions were too rushed & pale in comparison.

Elvis or whoever never bettered his 50's studio recordings of almost everything recorded during those years! All Shook Up is absolutely what it was and became to be: A classic! Who can NOT like this one? I file it under many other a classic, Don't Be Cruel, Treat Me Nice among them! It will live forever along with the two already mentioned and Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock, One Night..... All Shook Up is one of those songs you never tire of!

Not quite the equal of "Don't Be Cruel", but still a five star track. I have tired of this song, "Stuck On You" and "Heartbreak Hotel" over the years, but that shouldn't and doesn't take away from these classics.

Pop history. Elvis's first Uk #1. Eight weeks in the summer of 1957. Great 5 star recording. Never, never tire of listening to this gem. Elvis showing that he was the king of rock music. Sorry Beatle fans, but even the fab four never out did this recording.

Wonderful and defining. 5 stars *****

Along with Hound Dog and Don't Be Cruel I hope I never hear this song again. Sick to death of it.

Always loved it, always will!! Pure CLASSIC!! Lots of history tied to All Shook UP...for example, the MOST famous "grunt" on any song ever!--"I'm in Love, UH"...! Everyone on earth says the "UH" when they're listening to the song! Also, the unforgettable, mm mm hmm, hmm, "yeah yeah, yeah" was the exact thing that, (by Paul McCartney's own words), inspired the Beatles to say "Ya Ya Ya" in She Loves You. And then there is the title itself, made permanently imbedded in ones subconscience, because of Elvis, when one hears any connotation of it like "Don't get so shook up" or "Dont open that soda, its all shook up" there is absolutely NO choice in the fact that you are brought to Elvis singing it! And the statement is usually followed by someone saying thankyouverymuch or the uh-HUH-huh!! Thank you Elvis, for so much perfection!!

Loved this in the earlier days, but as said before over played on the radio. Is part of history though, never gonna change that. Rarely hear songs like "Too Much"shame, but that's DJs for.

absolutely brilliant, elvis slapping the back of the guitar a nice touch.when u hear it ,it brings to mind of a youthful elvis having fun in the studio.in my top 10 (maybe even top 5 )of elvis recordings.five stars,a sheer joy.

Over played indeed,i rarely play the 50's version. I like the '68 version the best.
Andy_2 wrote on July 16, 2011
The reason why he's the legend he is, not the morbid, dull 70's crap but sheer unadulterated rock n roll sung by the man who invented it. Sick and tired of hearing this? why on earth do you visit this site then. This is Elvis...........5 stars.
TCB1974 wrote on July 16, 2011
This is Elvis at his best! Love the guitar slapping on the back and the rhythm. Classic, legendary, definitely 5 stars from me.

The actual recorded 45RPM version is the ultimate recording; the future live, in concert versions, do not measure up to the original. Rushed in-concert live; a classic original on 45RPM.
GEORGE (GK) wrote on February 09, 2013
I agree that the ultimate version is the 1957 Version. And its an amazing recording. Simple and fun, with Elvis beating on the back of a guitar for the drum beat of the song.
Gorse wrote on February 09, 2013
I suppose it is ok as far as rock and roll records go - I can only give it 10 stars :-)
ElvisSacramento wrote on February 12, 2013
This is such a brilliant, electrifying, iconic, fun and unique song and the best rendition of it will definitely always be Elvis' smash #1 hit 1957 studio recording of it.
sugartummy wrote on February 22, 2013
I prefer this song in a much faster tempo like he did in '68 & '69. Albert King & Ry Cooder also have really great versions off this song. That doesn't mean I don't like the original version! I gave it 5 stars.
Cruiser621 wrote on May 19, 2013
The original as recorded and released in 1957, is 5-Star all the way. Coupled with "That's When Your Heartaches Begin" was unfortunately the start of his pop format and the demise of his rock 'n roll. I do not care for his later 1969-thru the 1970's concert versions; he rushed this song every time and one gets the feeling he just wanted to get his performance over with. A shame, as this song is very much a part of "Americana".

Definitive Elvis, how can someone sound so relaxed, so layed back and yet rock so hard, but Elvis pulls it off. Among the best rock songs ever, not just Elvis history, history period.
