Reviews

Today we have received the new double CD " We'll Make You Happy " on the Savoy label. The packaging is very simple and the front cover features a picture taken in Lakeland,FL. on April 27th (matinee performance), which is rather appropriate since almost all the soundboard recordings on this set are from the April 1975 tour including a show in Lakeland,FL. on the 28th. The latter concert being unreleased but rather short as it starts near the introductions of the band.

A lot of the materials on this double CD set has been released already, namely the Jacksonville,FL. show of April 25th on " A Damn Fine Show " and Macon,GA. of April 24th on " From Vegas To Macon ". It doesn't leave much new material for the hardcore collectors, but I guess it's nice to have them all under one roof so-to-speak. All the shows released from this tour so far are incomplete.

The first CD starts with the opening show of the tour ( first 13 tracks) in Macon,GA. and then goes into Lakeland,FL. ( from track 14 onwards ). Most of the soundboard recordings from this tour have strange mixes soundwise and the Lakeland show follows this rule as well, perhaps a bit better when compared to the others and to my ears could had been improved. It sounds as nothing was done on this and the vocal is better on Jacksonville and Macon shows. The latter two shows have exactly the same sound as their original outings. So far the only show that sounded really great from this tour is the FTD release " Dixieland Rocks ".

The highlights for me on the first CD are " My Boy ", " Help Me Make It Through The Night " and " Burning Love " from the Lakeland show. I guess I picked those because I was hearing them for the first time since " My Boy " from the previous show is very strong.

The second CD opens with the Jacksonville, FL. performance (first 14 tracks) and followed with " What Now My Love ? " recorded from the audience at the midnight show of February 17th 1973 in Las Vegas. The interest of this track is that Elvis is doing a part of this song in a spoken manner instead of singing. The sound is okay for an audience recording but we've heard better too.

The above CD ends with three songs recorded from the mixing desk and mentioned as being " The Summer of 1975 " (Date & Place is unknown). Well it won't be left unknown for a long time as they were most likely recorded at the matinee performance in Mobile,AL. on June 2nd 1975. Elvis mentions it's Monday afternoon and the Mobile shows were on that specific day of the week. The same tracks were used awhile ago on "Livestock Live". The sound on these is very good like all the soundboards from this June 1975 tour, but what we have here is rather brief. We have the last part of "Amen" and "I Got A Woman" finale, a short comment by Elvis and finally a small part of "Love Me" (about 21 seconds).

I can't say it's a bad release altogether and depends a lot on what you have into your CD collection. If you have the original outings of " A Damn Fine Show " and "From Vegas To Macon ", and don't particularly care for more 1975 shows then you can pass on this one. If you don't have those aforementioned titles then this might prove to be a very interesting set to obtain. For those who wants it all this set is obviously for you. I do like the idea of having these shows put together on a double CD set and got myself one.
