ReviewsThis fantastic concert was recorded in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in August of 1976.. The first thing that will grab your attention is the beautiful packaging Diamond Anniversary put together for this CD.. There are nine gorgeous, glossy photos of Elvis on stage in 1976..By looking at the pictures, it seems that Elvis was enjoying himself that night... Anyway... on to the concert.
The sound on this CD is as perfect as you will get on a bootleg.. The mix is superb !! Whoever was responsible for it did an excellent job... This show start to finish lasts about 62 minutes and is completely recorded at this Tuscaloosa concert..
Elvis opens with a very rocking version of C.C. Rider...Before going onto the next tune, Elvis calls the sound man onstage to fix his sound..Which Elvis says " I'll just blame it on J.D. " then he goes into the familiar I've Got A Woman/Amen...Though this version of Amen is longer than usual, and swings more than usual..And of course ends with the low tones of J.D. Sumner that Elvis has him do TWICE !!!! The man is loooowwww !!! Very cool !!
An average version of Love Me is up next, though this version is shorter than usual. If you Love Me, Let Me know sounds as good as always, followed by a strong version of You Gave Me A Mountain.. The medley that we all know is next.. All Shook Up, Teddy Bear/ Don't Be Cruel...Although this medley is known so well, it's always enjoyable to hear Elvis and the fans having so much fun..
A beautiful version of And I Love You So is up next - very nice. A kicking version of Jailhouse Rock is up next.. This one grooves !! Fever doesn't differ from the well known version from Aloha... America The Beautiful - What can you say of this tune?? As usual, the passion in Elvis' voice is very clear.. and on top of that, he throws in a reprise of the last chorus.. Magnificent !!!
The introductions are up next..Featuring an all too short take on Early Morning Rain..as well as What'd I Say and Johnny B. Goode with James Burton cooking as usual.. The standout solos are up next.. Ronnie Tutt is on fire...he plays a bombastic solo on those drums..Powerful !!! Jerry Scheff plays the blues like no other, and Elvis also asks Jerry to play " That Louisiana swamp thing.. " in which we here some southern fried funk.... Two newer members are up next, Tony Brown on piano, and David Briggs on electric piano.. It's with Briggs that Elvis sings one of the better tunes on the CD; L ove Letters... Elvis' rich, deep vocals are outstanding on this version..The Guercio Orchestra is up next with Hail Hail as always !!! The TCB band is in fine fine form tonight !! And this line-up is one of the better ones throughout Elvis' career.
Elvis' latest record is next; Hurt, and it is as powerful as ever. Hound Dog, with a very funny intro follows, and it is a good tight version of this Elvis standard... As with all of the later Elvis concerts, different members of the band's talents were showcased.. Tonight, it was Kathy Westmoreland's time to shine.. Singing My Heavenly Father Watches Over Me, you can almost picture the look on Elvis' face as he is drawn with the rest of us to Kathy's radiant voice.. Beautiful. Though Elvis says that Kathy is a tough act to follow, follow he does with an excellent version of Mystery Train/Tiger Man.. Of course ending with yet another version of Can't help Falling In Love..
Though it seems the later Elvis concerts were touch and go.. this one is an outstanding concert.. Elvis is in great spirits, his voice strong and confident, and as mentioned before, the sound quality is superb !! If you want to hear a 1976 Elvis concert, when everything had clicked, don't forget these Old Times..
