I Wish, I Wish For 2006

By Dan Siciliano, January 18, 2006 | Other
Wow! Over the past decade, Elvis fans have been treated like no other. We have seen and heard more of one artist than any other in history. From the very earliest recordings to his last concert tours, Elvis has been served to us on a whole bunch of silver platters, a decade long buffet of all things Elvis.

I have now dedicated so much room to all of my "special" Elvis CD's and DVD's that the wall has grown quadruple it's size in the past few years. We have all become so spoiled and used to these treats that any serious fan only expects what the great folks at RCA and the talents of Ernst Jorgensen can provide. It's amazing to mention that way over half of what is now "officially released" has been done so since Elvis' passing, so much that I feel that Elvis will never "truly" die, but will always be a magnetic, ever forward force of music and pleasure to so many people!

So, since I just said that most fans are spoiled and are always looking for something new, I thought I would start the wish list for 2006 and beyond. Here are some of the gems and goodies that I would love to see released. What are your wishes for 2006? Let the Elvis world know! Some may never come to be, but hey, as our man said back in 1968 "...if I can Dream!"

Here are some of my wishes for 2006:

1) Soundboard of June 26th, 1977;
2) In concert '77 released to DVD;
3) omaha and Rapid city FTD;
4) Pictures of Elvis' bedroom taken Today (come on already folks!);
5) "Don't Cry Daddy" Elvis / Lisa duet released (maybe a whole album of duets);
6) Gail Brewer-Giorgio executed at dawn;
7) "Girl Happy" released on DVD;
8) A DVD of Elvis movie outtakes;
9) A "That's The Way it Is" DVD with all the left over stuff;
10) "On Tour S.E." (of course);
11) Complete concerts from "On Tour" released as series of DVD's titled "Sold Out!"
12) Another postage stamp (hey, it's been a while!);
13) "Elvis - The Concert" released on DVD;

Ok, I know what some of you are thinking, Hey dummy, you forgot about ... Well that's the whole idea, let's hear what you're 'itchin to listen to or see ...

Nice wish list, Sir! I personally can do without any official '77 release. Given how bad he looked most of the time (in comarison) and how much the non-Elvis world still is stuck in stereotypes about '70s Elvis, I am very happy to enjoy just the bootleg DVDs that exist without the wholeworld seeing it. Likewise, the bedroom should remain private for now, given how much his death is still joked about. He doesn't need this kind of publicity. The original postal stamp played a large part in making people think there was such a thing as a "fat Elvis" so let's not remind them of that debacle. I also look forward to "Girl Happy" on DVD. Until then, I'm enjoying the DVD-R I have which was dubbed from a Turner broadcast of the original widescreen version. It's pretty good! Let's have the real thing! I also look forward to more movie outtakes someday resurfacing and for the official "special edition"/expanded versions of "EOT" and "TTWII." On the music front, let's have that new Sun box and let's see FTD keep progressing.

I would very much welcome a CD / DVD / Book project with all footage of Elvis triumphant return to the stage in 1969. Although a lot is available, it is scattered over too many releases. So Ernst, when you finished your SUN project ... :-)

ok, I know that i'd be asking for a lot, but i'll stick to the DVD Movies, I'd like for them to be all reissued with, Outakes, bloopers, deleted scenes, behind the scenes, and such i'll stick to that and of course for TTWII, & EOT Sp Editions.

How about a FTD release focusing on the 1971 studio sessions correcting the flaws of "Elvis Now" LP, and giving us all of the released stuff with unreleased stuff. And how about a complete chart hits box set that would include all of Elvis charting singles in chronological order,along with charting EP tracks like "Follow that Dream" (I know we just had Hitstory, but that left out a lot of song). Lastly, a DVD release of the complete 1950's Television appearances.

I started liking Elvis when I was 14 years old in 1969. See how old I am now!! Release the unheard and unseen stuff for those of us that were there when he was alive. We'd like to enjoy it also. I sure am glad I got to see him live 6 different times.

We can all wish for so much but, in the end, the well must be running nearly dry. There is only so much stuff out there and so we must be totally realistic as to what FTD and co. are likely to be able to serve up in 2006 and in the following years. So much now has a "heard it all before" feel to it, that I think the endless alternate takes and concerts are, in a way, dissipating the mans overall work. If I had my wish, it would be to see all the original albums (including soundtracks) released for the general public with 2LPs on each CD and sold at mid-price. This is of no use to many of the collectors, but I do feel it is important that new fans (and even casual buyers) should be able to go in a shop and browse through and buy these albums without paying £17 a throw for them on FTD. FTD is great, don't get me wrong, but it isn't the way to expose young people to the Elvis world. The master takes are, after all, (in most cases) the best take of each song and it is these that the general public should be able to access easily and the fact that many albums are not available cheaply and in good sound is criminal considering the importance of the artist. Many young fans simply won't be able to afford £17 for each CD - and probably wouldn't be that interested in the alternate takes at that early stage of their fandom. As far as I'm aware albums such as Raised On Rock, Today, How Great Thou Art, His Hand In Mine and the 1974 Memphis concert are only available via boxed sets, FTD or second-hand shops! FTD has brought out some remarkable material since it's conception in the late 1990s - I am still in shock every time I hear "Young and Beautiful" from the On Tour Rehearsals CD (wouldn't it have been great if he had gone into the studio in the 70s and remade some of his album tracks from the 50s with entirely new arrangements to show how he had developed?) The Jungle Room Sessions has gone a long way to get people re-evaluating Presley's last years. I also thought that "Takin' Tahoe Tonight" was a concert worthy of "public" release - but I also think "Dragonheart" should have remained unreleased! As for what I would like for us COLLECTORS in the future. Yes, a DVD of On Tour with extra footage would be great. In the reissue of classic albums on FTD, I think a remix of The Alternate Aloha is way overdue considering the hopeless sound quality it got in the 1980s. I am looking forward to the new Memphis alternate takes CD that has been announced for the Spring and I think all fans would like to, at last, hear alternate takes from the 1971 studio sessions - providing he sounds more inspired than on the Christmas LP - and think this would be a great opportunity to include the 14 minute version of Don't Think Twice.

I wish they (whoever: EPE, BMG, FTD) will keep sitting on the 1977 stuff forever, not only in 2006. I am looking forward to the upcoming FTD (Memphis), and I realize it's been a long time since I was really looking forward to an Elvis release. What I really wish is that the supposed lost songs from Sun turn up, or (more) outtakes from the 1956 sessions...

Releases that should come soon, DVD of Elvis in Concert both shows with maybe some editing (very little). Deluxe edition Elvis On Tour box set with the full concerts included and backstage rehearsals, this should be a 4 DVD set if done right. Last but not least DVD of the rest of the best of Elvis TTWII. with some editing. FTD keep up the great work!

I wish there would be a "Great Performances Volume 4" on DVD. The great performances I'd like to see on there would be: more Dorsey Brothers Clips, plus Party, Dixieland Rock, Young Dreams, Shoppin Around, Rock A Hula Baby, It Feels So Right, Bossa Nova Baby, Viva Las Vegas, C'mon Everybody, What'd I Say, Hard Knocks, One Broken Heart for Sale, Spinout, Long Legged Girl, Clean Up Your Own Backyard, Rubberneckin, TTWII Clips like Patch It Up, Some EOT clips like Burning Love & Big Hunk of Love. Those are some great Elvis performances & would make a great Volume 4.

I Would Love to have a release in audio or video, of the 1961 Memphis Concerts, since my favorit Elvis concert of all time is the 1961 Perl Harbour benefit concet.

Hey! Releasing the duet Elvis/Lisa "Dont Cry Daddy" as a single could become a huge hit in the US, and I'm not talking about charting on the single sales chart but the real Hot 100! A good video and it would reduce people to tears... I promise!

Great Wish List. I would also like to add (and this may be available in US but I have not seen in UK) the 25th anniversary concert in full held at The Pyramid. If this is available and decent quality then please be sure and let me know! Otherwise that would be one of my wishes. I too would love the ELvis/Lisa duet. I think both sound great on that!

I totally agree that we have been getting recycled Elvis music time and time again. My list maybe a little "too much" but I can wish can't I. My list consists of the following: 1.) "Kissin' Cousins" On DVD (preferably with bonus features!!!) 2.) "Live A Little, Love A Little" On DVD (preferably with bonus features!!!) 3.) "Girl Happy" On DVD ( preferably with bonus features!!!) 4.)"Tickle Me" On DVD ( preferably with bonus features!!!) 5.)a new remastered version of "Charro!" On DVD (preferably with bonus features!!!) 6.) "Stay Away, Joe" On DVD (preferably with bonus features!!!) 7.) A FTD release of "Kissin' Cousins" On CD 8.) A FTD release of "Girls! Girls! Girls!" On CD 9.) A FTD release of "Roustabout" ( I hope it has "I'm A Roustabout") On CD. 10.) A Deluxe Version of "Elvis On Tour" On DVD 11.) "Elvis In Concert" On DVD It would be in that order too! I truly enjoy the movies and I hope this year we get more since the only new DVD we got last year was "Kid Galahad" On dVD over here in the US (It's a great movie don't get me wrong) . Here's hoping that it comes true in 2006!

I wish in the future whenever there are new Elvis documentaries, that the narrators wouldn't talk over the performances. I'm yet to see a documentary that shows the "Hound Dog" performance from the Milton Berle Show in it's entirety WITHOUT someone talking over the performance. By now I think everyone knows that performance caused a controversary. And we don't need some narrator walking us through the performance everytime it's shown reminding us of it. After nearly 50 years I believe we all know the story. I don't mind hearing the host making comments about the performances shown in the documentaries. That is fine. If they have to talk, talk before or after these performances, not through them. On Great Performances Volume 3 the narrator ruined the song "Too Much" by talking through part of it. I buy these shows to see the Elvis performances not to hear someone talk over them. Give us unedited footage and no commentary through the songs please.

The expanded DVD re-issue of "Love Me Tender" (with extra features, interviews, etc.) bodes well for other Elvis movies! Let's make it a success! We are over-due to see "Elvis on Tour' on official DVD issue and certainly all the interest in unofficial releases of "EOT" and "That's the Way It Is" outtakes proves that much more can be done to exploit this material. Fans want it and will pay for premium versions of it! As for RCA/Sony-BMG, they must get back on track and stop making "new" Elvis albums. What a travesty his catalog has become. Elvis' albums are something many artists would die to have as their legacy. He need not be a "greatest hits" / gospel/ "love-song" artist!
